How stable is the trucking industry?

The trucking industry is in constant demand for new and qualified drivers.  There is an estimated 4 million trucks and only about 2.5 million drivers.

 

What is the average salary of a professional driver?

An entry-level driver can earn an average of $32,000—$34,000 in their first year.  Some motivated drivers can earn as much as $40,000.  Drivers with more experience typically enjoy a considerable increase in earnings.

Do trucking companies offer benefits?

Yes, the majority of trucking companies will offer very comparable benefit packages.  These will usually include:  Safety and mileage bonuses, Paid vacations, Flexible schedules, Paid Life and Health Insurance, Prescription cards, Dental and vision Insurance, Retirement and 401K plans, and Tuition Reimbursement.

What are the qualifications to become a truck driver?

To begin training for certification as a truck driver you must meet the following basic requirements.                  

                 *  You must be able to read, speak, write and understand the English language.

                 *  No felony criminal record in the past 5 years.

                 *  No alcohol or drug related motor vehicle violations in the past 3 years.

                 *  Must possess a valid driver's license.

                 *  Must be able to pass a DOT physical and drug screen.

                 *  Must be able to provide 2 forms of identification.

                 *  Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien.

                 *  Must be 18 years old by completion to drive Intrastate and 21 to drive Interstate.

 

I already have a CDL but companies are telling me I need a Refresher course.  What is it and do you offer this class?

Yes, we do offer CDL refresher courses.  Most companies require a refresher course if it has been a while since a driver has been behind the wheel.  The course is 2 weeks long and will include 80 hours of specialized training.

How long are your classes and what are the costs?

Our Class A 160 hour full time program is 4 weeks long, Monday through Friday from 8:00—5:00.  The part time program is on Saturday and Sunday from 7:00—5:30  and last for 8 weekends.  The cost of the Class A 160 hour program is $3400.00.  This includes all fees and Driver’s License costs.

Do you offer financing for your programs?

We do not personally offer financing for our students, however our programs are approved for funding through State, County, and Veteran’s programs such as WIA, TRA, TAA, and VR if you qualify.  We also work with two local financing companies in Lumberton.  Both of these are credit based loan companies.  They are CitiFinancial and  American General.  CitiFinancial can be reached at (910) 739-3366 and American General can be reached at (910) 738-7201.  We will also gladly accept payment through Credit, Cash or Cashier’s Check.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are three main types of truck driving jobs.  They are:

Local—Involves mostly loading and unloading at local businesses.  Pay is usually hourly and drivers are typically home every night.

Over-the-Road (OTR) — Involves delivering freight in all or part of the 48 states and possibly Canada.  Pay is typically based on the miles you drive, with a typical average of 2,500 miles per week.  Home time varies with every company, but you can expect to be out anywhere between 1-4 weeks.

Short Haul— Usually involves running shorter distances, from hub to hub.  Pay can be either hourly or mileage based.  You will typically be away from home from 2-4 days per week.

Most short haul and local companies will only hire experienced drivers.  Most of these driver will have over 1 year of verifiable driving experience.
